Melissa’s Journey – From the UK to Malta and Back to Sicily with Dirextra

Today we’d like to share the story of Melissa Fontana, who took part in the 31st edition of the Dirextra Placement Programme, held in Malta in September 2019.

Melissa currently works in the Purchasing and Technical Office at Italiana Costruzioni S.p.A., one of the top 10 construction companies in Italy. The company operates in the civil, real estate, infrastructure, restoration and global service sectors, with major projects abroad in Serbia, Qatar, Turkey and Lebanon, and an annual turnover exceeding €100 million.

Melissa graduated in Construction Engineering from the University of Palermo, earning her degree with honours (110 cum laude). After gaining her first professional experience in Malta with an engineering company based in Rome, she decided to take her career to the next level.

Aware of her potential, she enrolled in the Dirextra Placement Programme for Professional Engineers in the Construction and Oil & Gas sectors — determined to seize a new opportunity for growth.

During the programme, she was immediately selected by Cosedil S.p.A. for one of the main infrastructure projects in Sicily — the E45 Syracuse–Gela highway, for the construction of a new section from the Rosolini tollbooth to Modica. This section includes 20 km of motorway, two viaducts (800 m and 1,500 m respectively) and a tunnel of about 800 m.

After more than a year of experience supporting the technical office, accounting, testing and management control activities, Melissa was offered a new opportunity with Italiana Costruzioni S.p.A., another of Dirextra’s long-standing partner companies. She accepted the position and now works on the RI.MED Foundation Center for Biotechnology and Biomedical Research in Carini (Palermo).

Dirextra is proud to have helped Melissa realise her dream — like many other young engineers who aspire to work on major infrastructure projects in Italy and around the world.
